Where Lorem Ipsum Comes From
The text is a scrambled extract from “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, a treatise on ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC. Words were cut, altered and rearranged until the passage stopped making sense, which is why a Latin scholar cannot translate it either — “lorem” itself is the tail end of the word “dolorem”.
It has been used as printers' filler for centuries, but it became universal in the 1960s, when Letraset sold transfer sheets printed with it, and again in the 1980s, when desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker shipped it as sample text. Web design inherited it from there.
Why Use Placeholder Text at All
- It shows how a layout behaves with a realistic amount of text before the copy is written.
- It keeps feedback on design rather than on wording that is going to change anyway.
- It has roughly the letter frequency and word lengths of real European languages, so line breaks and paragraph shapes look natural.
- It is instantly recognisable as unfinished, which makes it harder to ship by accident than realistic fake copy.
When to Use Real Copy Instead
Placeholder text is fine for structural mockups. Swap in real copy, even a rough draft, before testing anything about readability, conversion or SEO — sentence length, keyword placement and heading structure cannot be judged against text nobody can read.
Content-first design goes further and argues for real copy from the start, because text that turns out twice as long as the lorem ipsum it replaced breaks layouts late. A useful middle ground is to write the real headings and calls to action first, and use lorem ipsum only for body paragraphs.

Lorem ipsum on a live page is a common embarrassment and a genuine search problem. Search engines index it like any other text, so staging pages that leak into the index, or templates that go live with a placeholder paragraph still in them, show up in results as gibberish.
